OWW Newsletter – September 2018

How about you?

OWW's 2018 theme is:

The World is Changing - How About Us

We have received our first submissions of events for One World Week but we know there’s so much more going on. Whether you’re in the midst of organising your event or haven’t started yet, there are lots of new resources on the website to help you.

Please help us celebrate OWW’s 40th Anniversary by showing what OWW is really doing by putting up ALL your events, no matter how small, on the website.

OWW 2018 Newsletter

The ideas behind ‘The World is Changing – How about us?’ theme (which has been adopted for the 2018 European Global Education Week) is to help people realise that the world really is changing. We are the first generation to know that we’re undermining the ability of the Earth, our home, to support human development. We know that we now need to change how we treat the earth, which means changing our lifestyles to build a future where all peoples and species may flourish without damaging the environment.

The illustration on the leaflet shows how we need all hands to build a sustainable future. The new resources explore ideas that we might use to challenge our current ways and re build in harmony with nature and for the benefit of everyone. (more on the THEME page;)

RESOURCES

You can find on the Resources page under the THEME and GUIDELINES resources library:

  • more detailed discussion about interpreting the theme,
  • publicity resources,
  • worship suggestions and
  • other useful resources and activities you can build an event around or add to your existing events

The newest items appear first but the rest are in the “library” (scroll through). If you are looking for something specific, perhaps from a previous year, type key words into the search box (top right of the page) and you’ll be offered a list of possible matches.

PUBLICITY RESOURCES

Making your own publicity? – You can use the images, headings etc. from the leaflet. If you are using the illustration, please credit Webber Design (www.webber-design.com).

THE LEAFLET is available to download and print (enter ‘2018 leaflet’ in search box) or go to theme page here. (We do have a small printed supply for distribution at events and in mailings. Please get in touch as soon as possible if you would like some. Contact us here)

WORSHIP RESOURCES (see Faith based resources)

We have radically revised and updated the 2009 worship anthology for 2018 and added alternative materials which you can use or adapt for a service that suits your needs for “The World Is Changing - How about us?”

DRAMA The short (5-7 mins) sketch, “Planet Doctor” (found in the Worship Anthology, also updated) fits the theme perfectly and is suitable for all ages, so you could use it in all kinds of events beyond worship – a cabaret at a OWW meal? a school assembly?

Scattering some of our “Let’s Talk” discussion starters around your coffee morning, or a selection of our Quotations about changing the world around your event venue, should get people thinking and talking about the theme. There is also a Timeline looking at changes over the 40 years OWW has been operating. Or you could include a OWW Quiz as part of your event. Whatever you choose, make sure you have pledges available, including a set about“Plastics, Waste and Recycling”, so people can commit to make some specific changes in their lives after the event.

FILMS We have a useful guide to help you choose. (Type ‘films’ in Search Box).

MATERIALS TO USE WITH YOUNG PEOPLE – OWW is part of Global Education Week – you may be interested in seeing what’s going on around Europe and making use of some of their resources. Visit GEW’s website to explore a feast of excellent resources.

BREAKING NEWS! A One World song

Portsmouth Music Hub have produced a great song for their One World project and we can all use it after it’s launched at the BBC Music Day on 28 September.

After that, we'll be able to share with you the video and an MP4 with the lyrics.

Just to give you a taste - this is the chorus:

We have one world
Treat it with respect
Only one world
It's our duty to protect
For the sake of future generations
Make a change right now
Unite together for one world

TELL US WHAT IS HAPPENING WHERE YOU ARE!

We are especially keen to know what is happening in OWW on this, our 40th Anniversary. Is OWW still inspiring local activities around the country? Putting up all your events encourages a sense of solidarity and inspiration across the whole OWW community. It also enables us to include you when we compile our necessary reports and gives us all a more accurate sense of the scale of what is going on.

So, PLEASE, upload your event, however small, on the website via this link to a brief form. It’s very easy and only takes a few minutes. (Later, we will also appreciate knowing how it all went via our 2018 evaluation form. There are data gathering sheets on the website which can help you at your event. (see Evaluation Resources)

New trustees & volunteers - We still need both. Please think about whether you, or someone you know, could join our small friendly Board of Trustees. To find out more about what is involved, please look at our Trustee Recruitment Pack (type: ‘Trustees Application Form’ into the Search facility on the Website)

We shall be needing volunteers to evaluate this year’s OWW activities after October. If you could spare a few hours to contact people by phone or collate or analyse feedback forms, please contact us.

COMMUNICATIONS

Don’t forget to “like” our Facebook page which, along with our website, is constantly being updated with news items about One World Week and relevant organisations. Individual donations for our core work, including those arising from events, and even Standing Orders, which are most welcome, should be sent via the Donate page on our website, wherever possible. We can also reclaim Gift Aid online as well. However, as a last resort, we do have a volunteer caretaker address to receive cheques at 15 Bryngwyn Road, Newport NP20 4JS.

With our good wishes for your 2018 events,

from the OWW team,

Alison, Aneta, Ingrid, Jonaid, Roger, Sarah and Sue
